Distraction: American Property Owners Alliance grants advance property rights.
Fact: APOA grants have gone to groups fighting critical race theory, abortion rights, and LGBTQ+ protections — issues with no connection to property rights. This betrays the REALTOR® Code of Ethics and misuses our dues.
The Sales Pitch
REALTORS® are told the American Property Owners Alliance (APOA) is a nonprofit designed to protect property rights. On paper, it sounds aligned with our mission. Who wouldn’t want their dues supporting the defense of property ownership?
But when you follow the money, the story changes.
The Reality of APOA Grants
Tax filings reveal that APOA has funneled millions into groups that:
- Campaign against critical race theory in schools.
- Work to restrict abortion rights and limit bodily autonomy.
- Oppose LGBTQ+ protections under the law.
None of these issues are about homeownership. None of them are about housing. They are cultural wedge issues — pulled directly from partisan playbooks.
Why It Matters
When NAR dues are rerouted into APOA, REALTORS® aren’t funding property rights advocacy — we’re underwriting political fights that divide our communities.
And worse: these grants directly conflict with Article 10 of the Code of Ethics, which requires REALTORS® to uphold fairness, equality, and nondiscrimination.
The Ethical Breach
Our profession is built on the principle that everyone deserves equal access to housing. Funding groups that undermine racial equity, LGBTQ+ rights, or gender equality isn’t just off-mission — it’s an attack on the very communities we serve.
The Call to Action
- Stop the misdirection: Property rights cannot be a smokescreen for culture wars.
- Hold leadership accountable: Every grant and every dollar spent must align with housing and Article 10.
- Reclaim REALTOR® values: We cannot allow our dues to bankroll discrimination disguised as “advocacy.”
Bottom Line
If it’s truly about property rights, prove it. Until then, APOA’s spending is a betrayal — of REALTORS®, of our Code of Ethics, and of the public we pledge to serve.
