Distraction: NAR is bipartisan. RPAC splits donations 50/50 between Democrats and Republicans.
Fact: Through the American Property Owners Alliance, NAR secretly funneled nearly $10 million to conservative groups pushing agendas against racial equity, abortion rights, and DEI — issues far outside housing. Member dues are being weaponized without transparency.
The Bipartisan Story We’re Told
For years, NAR has repeated the same line: We split RPAC dollars evenly between Republicans and Democrats. This “balance” is sold to members as proof that the association is neutral, fair, and focused only on property rights.
But behind the curtain, another story unfolds.
The Hidden Pipeline
Investigations by The New York Times revealed that NAR created the American Property Owners Alliance (APOA) — a nonprofit funded entirely by member dues. Between 2020 and 2023, APOA gave out nearly $13 million in grants. Almost $10 million went to conservative groups with agendas that had nothing to do with real estate:
- Attacking racial equity programs.
- Fighting abortion rights.
- Campaigning against diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Meanwhile, most REALTORS® never even knew APOA existed — let alone that their dues were being redirected this way.
Why This Matters
This isn’t about party labels. It’s about trust and transparency. Members are told one story (bipartisan, issue-focused, fair) while their money quietly bankrolls partisan culture wars. That’s not neutrality. That’s a betrayal.
The Ethical Standard
Article 10 of the Code of Ethics requires REALTORS® to uphold fairness, nondiscrimination, and equal opportunity. When our dues fund organizations that directly oppose those values, the association itself is violating the spirit of its own Code.
The Call to Action
- Demand transparency: Members deserve to know where every dollar goes.
- Stop funding culture wars: If it’s not about housing, it doesn’t belong in our budget.
- Enforce Article 10 at every level: Our endorsements and donations must reflect the values we are sworn to uphold.
Bottom Line
NAR can’t claim “bipartisanship” while funneling millions into partisan causes. REALTORS® deserve honesty — not sleight of hand.
